“In Search of the Hunters and their Tribes: Studies in the History and Culture of the Taiwan Indigenous People” was published by the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines, and edited by Dr. David Faure of the University of Oxford.This book resulted from a research project, which began in 1995, by academics from the University of Oxford and Taiwan on the development of ethnic identity among the indigenous people of Taiwan.

In this book, the powerlessness of the indigenous groups under various government regimes that refused to recognize their felt need to preserve valued ways of life is captured. In addition, the contributing scholars welcomed the chance to be involved in the debate on how an indigenous way of life might continue under the global uniformity that in this day and age is being produced by intense economic competition and technological advance. This includes the preservation of cultural artifacts, supporting the revival of customs and the preservation of languages.
